Lamar Walker was born and raised in Shelby, North Carolina. Graduate of Shelby High School and Nashville Auto Diesel College in Tennessee, he now lives in Clover, South Carolina with his wife Sandra. Together they have 4 children, 11 Grandchildren and 3 Great-Grandchildren (referred to as “the grands”) who they dearly love.
Lamar learned of WSGE when Johnny B. mentioned his Saturday morning beach & shag show “Carolina Beach Party” over the PA at “Alive After Five” event in Shelby. Lamar found 91.7FM on the dial and began listening. Lamar says “At that time I never thought I would someday become involved with the station. I have always loved the Beach, Shag, Rhythm and Blues music. I guess I really found the love for the music during the Motown years and just continued to follow the music.”
In 2005, Lamar had caught the DJ bug – and while out at SOS in Myrtle Beach, watching Shag Dancers, he asked WSGE’s own Kyle Beam if he would help with acquiring good equipment. Kyle agreed, but also asked Lamar if he would come to the station and help. “I said no way, I don’t know how. Well, one thing led to another and here I am 11 years later as of this month.” Lamar recalled. “I don’t remember the date but it was Spring SOS 2006, Tim Boggs asked if I was interested in filling in while he was at SOS. I had been through the Announcing Workshop, completed my in-studio training with Scott Smith a.k.a. “The Youngblood” and permission was granted from Cathis Hall. I don’t think we were streaming at the time and that may have been a good thing because Tim couldn’t listen.” In 2006, Lamar officially joined the WSGE family.
You can catch Lamar Walker every Saturday morning; 6:00am to 9:00am on the “Beach Beat.”
