On the Air!
Thera Martin, a radio broadcaster with four decades of on-air experience, has joined the volunteer team at WSGE/FM. She is serving as a fill-in host for the community affairs program, Consider This, which is broadcast on Sundays at 11am. During Black History Month, Thera is producing “Dreams Deferred,” a segment that addresses issues that are adversely impacting African American youth in this country.
Thera’s radio career started at WNOV/AM in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. While a student at Marquette University, she was accepted into the WNOV Internship program. After graduating with a Broadcast Communications Degree and returning to her hometown of Philadelphia, Thera was hired to work at WDAS AM/FM radio stations where she remained for 26 years of her career. At WDAS Thera was a news reporter, a news anchor, a producer for public affairs talk shows, and ultimately she rose to the ranks of Special Assistant to the General Manager. Thera eventually moved on to become a Program Director at 1340/AM, WHAT Radio, where she also hosted a daily talk show. Her last radio gig in Philadelphia was at WURD AM/FM, where she also served as the Program Director for several years and then as an on-air daily talk show hosts for 10 years until she moved to this area.
Thera was introduced to the station by the late Tammy Greene, who was a former on-air deejay and was known to people in the Carolinas as “The Jazz Diva”. They are both from Philadelphia, and members of the same sorority. After arriving in Belmont, NC, Thera remembers Tammy saying, “I’m taking you to the best radio station in the Carolinas where my brother Tim Greene works.”
